Overview of Automatic HTTPS in Brave
Automatic HTTPS connections ensure that your browsing sessions use secure, encrypted channels whenever possible. Brave integrates an “Upgrade to HTTPS” feature—similar to the former HTTPS Everywhere extension—to push your visits from HTTP to HTTPS. Activating this feature protects your data against eavesdropping, tampering, and certain types of surveillance.
Why Enable Automatic HTTPS
- Enhanced Privacy: Encrypts data exchanges to keep credentials and personal details safe.
- Data Integrity: Prevents intermediaries from altering page content in transit.
- Improved Security: Guards against man-in-the-middle attacks, especially on public Wi-Fi networks.
Preparing Your Brave Browser
1. Check Brave Version
Automatic HTTPS support is available in recent Brave releases. To verify your version:
- Open Brave.
- Click the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Select About Brave.
- Confirm you’re running the latest version. If not, update.
2. Understand Shields vs. HTTPS Upgrade
Shields protects you by blocking trackers, ads, and fingerprints. The “Upgrade to HTTPS” feature is a distinct setting that only changes HTTP requests to HTTPS when the server supports it. Both work together to fortify your browsing.
Activating Automatic HTTPS
Step-by-Step Guide
- Open Brave and click the menu icon (☰) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the dropdown.
- In the sidebar, click Security and privacy.
- Scroll to the Additional security settings section.
- Locate the Upgrade to HTTPS toggle:
- Turn it on to enable automatic HTTPS upgrades.
- Close Settings. The change takes effect immediately.
Alternative Path via Brave Shields
- Click the lion icon to open Shields on any page.
- Click the gear icon (Shields settings).
- Ensure Upgrade Connections to HTTPS is enabled.
Testing Your Configuration
1. Visiting an HTTP-only Site
Enter a URL beginning with http:// (for example, http://example.com). If the site supports HTTPS, Brave will automatically redirect you to https://example.com.
2. Developer Tools Verification
- Right-click the page and select Inspect.
- Go to the Network tab and refresh.
- Observe request URLs: they should start with https://.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Site Doesn’t Support HTTPS
Some legacy sites lack HTTPS support. In those cases, Brave will load the page via HTTP.
Conflicting Extensions
Extensions like the original HTTPS Everywhere may conflict. Disable or remove duplicates under Settings gt Extensions.
Clearing Cache
If redirects don’t apply consistently, clear browsing data:
- Go to Settings gt Privacy and security.
- Click Clear browsing data and choose Cached images and files.
