Introduction
Brave’s built-in autofill system streamlines form completion by automatically inserting saved data such as passwords, addresses, payment methods and, in the case of Brave’s Crypto Wallet, blockchain addresses. By default, certain sensitive autofill operations—especially those involving financial data or private keys—require reauthorization after a period of inactivity. Adjusting this timeout interval can improve convenience or enhance security depending on your workflow.
Understanding the Autofill Timeout
Autofill timeout refers to the duration of inactivity after which Brave will lock sensitive autofill features and prompt you to re-authenticate. There are two main contexts:
- Form Autofill (Passwords, Addresses, Credit Cards) – In most cases, Brave does not lock these by default, but enterprise deployments might enforce a re-authentication policy.
- Crypto Wallet Autofill – When connecting to Web3 sites or signing transactions, your wallet locks after a preset idle period to protect private keys. Adjusting this timeout changes how long your wallet remains unlocked for autofill of addresses and transaction signatures.
Why Adjust the Timeout
- Enhanced Security: Shorter timeouts limit the window during which an unauthorized user can access sensitive autofill data.
- Improved Convenience: Longer timeouts reduce repeated unlock prompts if you’re actively working through multiple forms or dApps.
- Custom Enterprise Policies: System administrators can align timeout values with organizational requirements.
Adjusting the Crypto Wallet Autofill Timeout
Step 1: Open Brave Settings
Launch Brave and click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner. From the dropdown, select Settings.
Step 2: Navigate to Crypto Wallets
In the left sidebar, click Wallet (or Crypto Wallets in older versions). This opens the wallet management panel.
Step 3: Access Security Privacy
Within the Wallet settings, find the Security Privacy section. Here you’ll see an option labeled Auto-Lock Idle Timeout (or similar).
Step 4: Select a Timeout Interval
Click the dropdown menu next to Auto-Lock Idle Timeout and choose the interval that best suits your needs. Common options include:
Timeout Value | Description |
---|---|
1 Minute | Maximum security wallet locks almost immediately after inactivity. |
5 Minutes | Balance between security and convenience for short sessions. |
30 Minutes | Convenient for extended browsing or multi-transaction tasks. |
12 Hours | Least secure wallet remains unlocked all day unless manually locked. |
Step 5: Confirm and Test
- After selecting your desired timeout, close Settings.
- Interact with a dApp or click the wallet icon and observe when the lock screen reappears.
- If you need to manually lock immediately, use the Lock button in the Wallet panel.
Advanced: Enterprise and Command-Line Overrides
For system administrators or power users, Brave supports policy-based configuration and command-line flags.
- Windows/macOS Policy File: Deploy a JSON policy under com.brave.Browser.plist or Windows Group Policy. Look for the WalletIdleTimeout key.
- Command-Line Flag: Launch Brave with
--wallet-idle-timeout-minutes=VALUE
to override the UI setting temporarily. For example:
brave --wallet-idle-timeout-minutes=5
Best Practices
- If you handle large sums or sensitive dApps, choose a shorter timeout (1–5 minutes).
- For casual browsing where frequent re-authentications are disruptive, a longer timeout (30 minutes or more) may be acceptable.
- Combine timeout adjustments with other security measures: strong device PIN/password, OS-level disk encryption and, where available, biometric unlock for Brave.
- Regularly review your settings after browser updates to ensure timeout values haven’t reset.
